Program sponsored by Inland Empire Society for Calligraphy

No charge for this hybrid ( In-person and On-line)  Outreach program.

    SATURDAY,  NOVEMBER 23, 10:30am - 1:30pm (PST)

We're aiming to have more of an in-person presence, in addition to maintaining our robust online schedule. Locals are welcome to join us at the San Dimas Library to spread out with our project and enjoy each other's company as Cindy demonstrates. We'll have a sewing machine and some spare paints to share.

San Dimas Library, 145 N Walnut Ave San Dimas, CA 91773

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM: Receiving personal mail is such a treat in these days of email and text messages. We will make several postcards from a variety of mixed-media supplies in a veryfreeform style. You absolutely do not need to have mixed-media experience to create a variety of striking postcards; Cindy will take us through the process every step of the way. You will learn a set of techniques that you can use over and over, while creating sets of postcards that each look different. Sending original artwork as a postcard is such a surprise for the recipient. I know they’ll love them!

These postcards will meet the US Postal Services regulations for postcards that can be sent without envelopes. Like commercial postcards, there’s space on the back for a short message,as well as an address. These postcards have successfully made their way to Canada, too.

Note from Kristi: although the sample cards don't show calligraphy being incorporated, I challenge participants to do that, once Cindy demonstrates the process. Members will be invited to participate in a mail exchange.

Supply list: 20241123_Supply List for Postcards Class.pdf

    Skills required: all levels.

Recording will be available for two months after the program.

SPONSORED BY SFC'S INLAND EMPIRE CHAPTER

2 Thursday evening sessions with Cheryl Jacobsen.  6:30 to 8:30 PM (PST).

    $x  No refunds.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:  A blackletter hand like Textura prides itself on its upright demeanor and slow, steady movement, but Gothic Cursive is more laid back (literally), fast and free flowing. We will talk about various historical and modern examples, then get step by step instruction and feedback on the Gothic Cursive Cheryl has developed over time. Join her in this workshop to learn this fun and floridly expressive hand.

Experience level: Basic knowledge of pen angle pen use needed but any level welcome.

We will make Padlet available for sharing work for critique, as well as with fellow students.  Recordings will be available for three months after the close of the series.

ABOUT CHERYL:  Cheryl Jacobsen is a calligrapher and an assemblage artist. She is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Iowa’s Center for the Book where she teaches a variety of classes including a history of western letterforms, and several in modern calligraphic hands. ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: I am interested in any “forms" I see surrounding me. As a calligrapher I have been experimenting to create letterforms based on the forms I capture from the surroundings and play with them by writing text. The Roman alphabet is basically designed with a geometric system and the letter O is the mother form for developing a set of 26 letters.

In this workshop, we will start by making variations of letter O. We will get ideas from existing letterforms including historical and contemporary forms, ancient sine language, man-made architecture, natural forms and abstract paintings.  We will consider the meaning of the text and the form of O to create unique alphabets. Then we will work on lines that are made by writing text from legible to abstract. As our final products, we will construct accordion books with the lines we created and collaged colorful shape elements which relate the form of O.
