Description:

The Foundational Hand is based on the 10th century Ramsey Psalter (BL, Harley 2904) and was popularized by the English calligrapher Edward Johnston in the early 20th century. This letterform provides an excellent basis for understanding the structure of the minuscule alphabet. The form is based on the circle and vertical straight line, and it provides a very clear concept and a good lettering discipline.

This course begins with analysis of 10thcentury English Carolingian to observe how the form was structured and written. Then we study geometric skeleton form of the Foundational hand. Once the form and letter spacing become familiar, we study weighted form with broad edged tool. We will practice text writing with study of basic design, layout and composition as well as usage of colors.

As the hand’s variation, narrow foundational hand and light weighted contemporary style of the hand will be presented. This study of the Foundational Hand will seed for learning calligraphic letterforms of almost any kind.
