"Emblems, Icons, and the Elites who Loved Them: Decorated Manuscripts in Early Modern England"
In 16th and 17th century England, writers, poets, and artists from various social stations and homelands moved to London to court the patronage of the aristocracy. They intended to woo their elite clientele by filling the pages of books and manuscripts with vivid heraldic devices, emblematic icons, mottos and verse, thus creating constellations of visually striking iconography. This talk explores these codicological monuments of honor that complicate our modern conventions of genre.
Dr. Vanessa Wilkie curates the renowned collections of medieval manuscripts and British History at the Huntington Library and Gardens. She has published on female editorial practices, patronage, and death rituals. Her forthcoming book A Woman of Influence: The Spectacular Rise of Alice Spencer in Tudor England (Atria/Simon & Schuster) will be available April 2023.
