About this Workshop: 

Add another dimension to your calligraphy and lettering with a variety of colored pencil techniques. A techniques sampler will be done first and then I will demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to your letterforms. Various paper surfaces and colored pencil brands will be discussed.

About Jane Shibata: Jane Shibata is a part-time faculty member in the art department at Santa Monica College in California and runs a design business specializing in the lettering arts in Los Angeles. Jane worked for the City of Los Angeles as a calligrapher for a few years and has done contract calligraphy work for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Graphic Arts division. She is a long-time Society for Calligraphy Southern California member who serves on the board, coordinates outreach events, and teaches many workshops for the Society for Calligraphy. Jane has also taught for a few other guilds in California and other states, SfC Letters California Style, and four international calligraphy conferences. Jane is a charter member of the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) and is the immediate past president of the Los Angeles chapter of the CPSA.

SUPPLY LIST

(Don’t buy anything if you have the items listed. Purchase only those items that you don’t have or want to try)

1. Colored pencils: 

A. open stock of a variety of colors or a set of 12 or 24 colors

     Select a brand: Prismacolor, Faber Castell, Caran d'Ache, or 

     Derwent (artist's series, not student grade)

B. water-soluble colored pencils, any brand, open stock of a variety of colors or a set of 12 or less

2. Paper: 
-- any sketch or drawing paper, 8.5 x 11" or 9 x 12"

-- Strathmore Artagain  black or any black paper with some tooth

 -- Bienfang 360 layout pad, 9 x 12" or Borden & Riley Cotton 

      Comp layout pad, 9 x 12" or any thin weight layout paper

3. Craft stylus (usually used for stencils) or a ball point pen that 

     doesn't work anymore

4. Sakura Micron, Pismacolor Fine Liner, or similar, 05 or any size you have, black

5. Pencil, HB

6. Eraser, (or a retractable style, such as Pentel or similar)

7. Pencil sharpener, small hand held or electric/battery operated

8. Container or small paper bag for pencil shavings

9. Pilot Parallel pen, 6 mm and/or 3.8 mm, black ink

10. X-Acto #11 knife or retractable knife with break off blades

11. water brush, any brand

12. gold or silver or any metallic gel pens, such as Pentel Slicci or Sakura Gelly roll or Uniball Signo


Optional items: (Only if you have any of these items.)

- Finesse color blender

- Koh-I-noor multicolor pencils, such as tri-tone or magic pencils

- Blair Low Odor workable fixative

- white gouache
